Carbon Capture and Storage:
Key Issues and Challenges
March 3-4, 2008
1615 H Street, N.W.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hall of Flags
Washington, DC
As the United States addresses growing concerns about the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is emerging as one of several advanced technologies to limit emissions. CCS technology offers the ability to capture, compress, transport, and store CO2 emissions from power plants—a key development for electric utilities to be able to use coal as an energy resource in a carbon-constrained world. However, there are several challenges to implementing this technology, including:
- permitting
- transport
- storage
- cost
- potential liabilities
- and public acceptance
The Edison Foundation is conducting a forum for policymakers, energy industry participants, and technical innovators, to discuss the global importance of CCS, the technical and non-technical challenges, and the timeline and financing of this critical technology.
